The 4th Khachaturian International Festival was launched with the project ''Khachaturian Meets Jazz''

The 4th Khachaturian International Festival, dedicated to the 25th anniversary of Independence of RA, was launched on October 6 with a project entitled "Khachaturian Meets Jazz". The festival is held under the patronage of the President of RA Serzh Sargsyan. It is implemented thanks to the joint efforts of the State Youth Orchestra of Armenia (General Partner of the Orchestra - VivaCell-MTS) and the "Classical Music Support" NGO, with the support of the Ministry of Culture of RA, the "Khachaturian" Foundation and the European Foundation for Support of Culture.

During the opening ceremony of the festival the State Youth Orchestra of Armenia and the State Jazz Orchestra of Armenia performed jazz arrangements of Khachaturian's works. The world premiere of David DeBoor Canfield's Concerto after Aram Khachaturian for Saxophone and Orchestra took place during the concert (soloist Hayrapet Arakelyan, Armenia/Germany).  Vahagn Hayrapetyan (piano) and Armen Hyusnunts (saxophone) also performed as soloists. The orchestras were headed by the conductors Sergey Smbatyan and Armen Hyusnunts.

The Artistic Director and Principal Conductor of the State Youth Orchestra of Armenia Sergey Smbatyan informed that the 4th Khachaturian International Festival includes 20 concert evenings - symphonic and chamber concerts, ballet performances, as well as master classes. Famous artists Julian Milkis (clarinet / Canada), Jonathan Roozeman (cello / Finland / Netherlands), conductor Florian Helget (Germany), Evgeny Starodubtsev (piano / Russia), Zohrab Tatevosyan (violin / Armenia / Spain), Lilit Grigoryan (piano / Germany) and many others will perform in Armenia from October 6 to December 10 within the framework of this musical feast.

Maestro Smbatyan emphasizes the high importance of the artists and collectives who live and work in Armenia. The Armenian artists Aram Talalyan (cello), David Gyulamiryan (clarinet), String Quartet after Aram Khachaturian, "Hover" State Chamber Choir, Khachaturian Trio, Komitas National String Quartet and others will come up with concerts in the framework of the festival.

"Armenia is rich in highly professional and devoted musicians. The greatest achievement of our festival is its unique format which provides an equal opportunities and the same platform for both well-known foreign and talented Armenian musicians," - Maestro Smbatyan said.

The composition of the American composer David DeBoor Canfield based on Aram Khachaturian themes was presented at the opening concert of the festival for the first time. The composer noted that he had got acquainted with Khachaturian pieces, when he was a student. He played the composer's Violin Concerto for many times and the latter inspired him to compose this Concerto based on the Khachaturian themes. David DeBoor Canfield noted that Khachaturyan's compositions perfectly sound in jazz variations.

At the same day, on October 6 a photo exhibition within the framework of the festival was held at the Aram Khachaturian Concert Hall. The event was organized by the International Union of Photographers. It included photographs of the participants of the contest-festival "Freedom."

The sponsors of the 4th Khachaturian Festival are "Jermuk Group" Company, "Ani Plaza" Hotel, the Yerevan Brandy Factory and the ArmSwissBank.
